Check Disk space in Kali Linux

After installing Kali Linux on hard drive or on virtual machine, we may have come across with a warning message of "Low Disk usage". It happens when we allocate insufficient disk space during partition for kali linux or else when we do a regular "update" and "upgrade" of patches or downloading softwares. Kali Linux comes with a graphical built-in tool, i.e. Disk Usage Analyzer. This tool helps you to check the disk space usage. There are other options too, to check usage as per file system.

If you need to check from terminal(for non-gui users), then there are two classic commands available for every linux distros, i.e.

(a) df: Report file system disk space usage

(b) du: Estimate file space usage

df command is used to check free disk space. You can type df -h or df -k to list free disk space. It displays statistics about the amount of free disk space on the specified file system or on the file system of which file is a part. Values are displayed in 512-byte per block counts.

du command is used to show how much space one ore more files or directories is using. Type du -sh where -s option summarize the space a directory is using and -h option provides "Human-readable" output.

Dell 7537 Windows 10 Upgrade issue reboot loop and how to rebuild without Recovery disk create Dell recovery disk yourselves

Reboot loop after upgrading to Windows 10 & Rebuild Dell machine from scratch without recovery disk.

Even though Im writing this blog little bit late but I think it might be useful to others. With Windows 10 release I started upgrading my Dell 7537 laptop to Windows 10 on first day itself, I did created Dell recovery disk as I was was confident that upgrade will go smooth, but it didnt happen :(.

After upgrading to Windows 10 my laptop was on continuous reboot loop and I tried various options from Boot such as changing to GPT, UEFI and it didnt help at all. Now Im stuck as there was no option to go back to Windows 8.1 and I dont have recovery disc, I tried searching media all over WEB but I couldnt find source anywhere. Then I contacted Dell UK Support and they informed me that Dell Recovery Disks costs around £29/- which I was not ready to pay. Moreover they can only provide disks but the model doesnt have CD/DVD Drive, hence recovery disks from DELL is not solution at all, when I asked support engineer how to recover with disks he dont have answer, what he mentioned was I need to use another computer to convert disks into bootable USB Disk. After getting escalated to his line manager he offered to provide disks for free but he mentioned it takes 5 business days to receive (I actually received after 10 days). Also I cant install OS without Product Key, at least in my model I dont have Product Key sticker its embedded in hardware.

As my machine was no use and didnt have recovery disks yet from Dell, I have started searching various other options by going through various blogs. I came across this wonderful & very helpful sites for Dell - http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/ by Philip Yip.

What I understand is that we cannot directly build Windows 10 even if you have Product Key, the option is to upgrade Activated version of Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10.

Note by performing below steps you will lose the data as we are formatting so I suggest you to take backup on another disk.

Requirements

A working machine with internet connectivity
USB Disk with at least 8GB

Since my machine is not bootable I followed the below steps

Downloaded Windows 8.1 media creation tool
Downloaded Windows 8.1 x64 ISO
Using Rufus-2.2 created bootable version of 8.1
Make sure Dell Laptop is configured with UEFI Partition & GPT disks (this is default settings for Dell laptop)
Boot from USB Stick it will automatically build the machine with Windows 8.1
After installation, Windows 8 is activated
I didnt install NVIDIA GEFORCE drivers as many said the reboot loop might be because of nvidia display
Download Windows 10 using media creation tool
copied the ISO to bootable USB media using Rufus
From windows 8 itself launched setup.exe and it upgraded windows 10 without any issue.

The “A disk read error occurred error” appears on a black screen without an identifiable error code:

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Pressing the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys will only restart the computer and boot into the same error screen:

You can try and fix the “A disk read error occurred” error by following any of these methods. These fixes can be applied to the followings Windows versions:

Windows Setup CD/DVD Required!
Some of the solutions below require the use of the Microsoft Windows setup CD or DVD. If your PC did not come with a Windows installation disc or if you no longer have your Windows setup media, you can use Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows instead. EasyRE will automatically find and fix many problems, and can also be used to solve this problem with the directions below.

Fix #1: Check RAM memory

If you recently added new RAM memory to your computer, you can try to:

Remove the new RAM modules you’ve recently added
Leave only 1 single RAM module
Restart the computer

You can also try to move the single RAM module on a different slot to troubleshoot if any of your RAM slots are damaged. To do that, simply follow these steps:

Leave 1 RAM module on Slot #1
Restart the computer

If “A disk read error occurred” still appears, move the RAM module on Slot #2 and start the computer again.

Fix #2: Check Hard Disk Cables

If the error is caused by damaged hard disk cables, try any of the following tips to fix the error:

Try a different port for the SATA/IDE cables
If you have more than 1 HDD, leave only the HDD with Windows installed and test multiple SATA/IDE ports and cables

The “A disk read error occurred” error can appear if:

The SATA/IDE cables are damaged
The SATA/IDE ports of your hard disks are damaged

If the HDD cables and ports are not damaged, the issue can also be from the hard disk itself.

To test if your hard disk is failing or it’s already failed, use Easy Recovery Essentials’ Automated Repair. Automated Repair process will report any issues found with your hard disk or RAM memory:

Download Easy Recovery Essentials
Burn the ISO Image. Follow our instructions on how to burn a bootable ISO image. If you’d like to have a recovery USB instead, follow our instructions on how to make a recovery USB.
Boot into Easy Recovery Essentials
Select Automated Repair
Click Continue and wait for the Automated Repair process to finish. Automated Repair process will report any issues found with your hard disk or RAM memory:

Fix #3: Reset or Upgrade BIOS

In some cases, “A disk read error occurred” can be fixed by either reverting your BIOS to its default settings or upgrading BIOS to the latest version available for your computer.

To revert your computer’s BIOS to its default settings or default configuration, follow these steps:

Restart the computer
Press the key to boot into BIOS. This is usually any of the following keys: F2, F8, F12, Esc or Del. The key you need to press will be listed at the first screen when you boot your computer:
Once booted into BIOS, find a “Load Defaults” options. The option name to revert to default settings can be different, depending on your computer manufacturer and BIOS version:
- Load Fail-Safe Defaults
- Load BIOS Defaults
- Load Default Settings
- Load Setup Default
- Get Default Values
Select to revert the settings and hit Enter to select the option
Exit BIOS by saving the changes

If reverting to BIOS defaults doesn’t make “A disk read error occurred” disappear, you can also try to update the BIOS version to the latest available.

Fix #4: Run chkdsk

The chkdsk utility checks for hard drives integrity and can attempt to fix various file system errors.

To run chkdsk on a Windows XP system, follow these steps:
