Troubleshooting Lenovo Laptop Wireless Connections
Troubleshooting Lenovo Laptop Wireless Connections

Note that these steps correspond with decision points on the flowchart and are reached through the interactive diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.
Does the laptop software see the wireless network? Does the laptop operating system software see the wireless network you are trying to connect to? Many notebooks come equipped with a special manufacturers configuration utility, such as lenovos ConfigFree, in addition to standard OS connectivity software, like the "View Available Wireless Networks" option in modern Windows versions. In addition, there should be a little wireless icon in the system tray, which may flash a small bubble announcement when it connects or fails to connect. Floating the mouse pointer over the wireless icon in the system tray on a Windows desktop should show the name of the wireless connection (often a HEX address that looks like alphabet soup if not changed from the default), the speed (54 Mbps for 802.11G), the signal strength, and whether a connection to a router has been established. Note that a connection to a router does not imply a connection to the internet.
Manufacturer provided software can provide a much more accurate picture of relative router distances and signal strength. In some circumstances, especially public networks at hotels, campuses and coffee shops, your laptop may consistently choose to connect to a weak router or access point when stronger signals are available. The manufacturer software usually shows this much clearer than the five green signal strength bars of "View Available Wireless Networks."
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Is the external wireless switch, is so equipped, enabled? When a laptop wont connect to a wireless network, more often than not its because the wireless adapter is switched off or disabled in software. As with volume controls for computer speakers, wireless networking can be disabled both manually and through software, and in more than one place. Most modern laptops come equipped with an manual slide switch on the front or side of the laptop that turns the wireless adapter on or off. There is is usually an LED associated with the switch that will be lit only when the laptops wireless capability is on. However, the LED will remain lit even if the wireless has been disabled in software, it is a status indicator for the hardware switch only. The switch can easily be turned off by accident when picking up the laptop or even by a book or other table clutter coming into contact with the side of the notebook, so its a very common problem.
The easiest place to tell if the laptop wireless adapter has been disabled through software is in Device Manager. One sure sign the adapter is disabled in software (or not operating properly) is if it doesnt appear in the system tray. If your laptop wireless adapter is discrete, a USB or PC card (PCMCIA) plug-in, shut down, make sure its plugged in firmly, and reboot. Even if the wireless device is designed to be hot-swappable (plugged in while the laptop is turned on) its better to shut down and do it, since this will give the operating system a chance to reset.

Why laptop runs hot and turns off or freezes
Why laptop runs hot and turns off or freezes
Why laptop runs hot and turns off or freezes?
My laptop runs very hot and eventually turns off or freezes this is one of the most common complaints I have been receiving from my customer for many years. Why its happening? Is there an easy fix for that?
Most likely this problem is heat related. Take a look at the following picture.
Any laptop has a cooling module which consists of heatsink and cooling fan. When laptop is working, the processor (CPU) heats up and because of that the heatsink is getting hot too. At some temperature level, the fan kicks in and cools down the heatsink.
The problem starts when the laptop cooling module collects too much dust inside. Usually dust collects between the fan and heatsink. Dust clogs the heatsink and kills normal airflow inside the cooling module. Eventually, the processor gets very hot and the laptop turns off unexpectedly or freezes. This problem can be fixed by cleaning the laptop cooling module.
Cleaning laptop cooling module.
Some laptops give you an easy access to the heatsink and fan. In laptops like that you can access the cooling module through the bottom cover.
In my example I had to remove the cooling module. Otherwise, I wouldnt be able to remove the fan and access the heatsink. In some laptops you can remove the fan without separating the heatsink from the CPU.
After I removed the fan, I found a thick layer of dust inside the heatsink. Cleaning the heatsink should fix any heat related problems.
Apply thermal paste on the processor.
If thermal paste on the processor dried out, you should replace it with fresh thermal paste.
Remove old thermal paste from the processor and heatsink using alcohol swab.
WARNING: In some laptops the heatsink also covers the graphics chip. The part of the heatsink which covers the graphics chip might have thermal pad on it instead of regular thermal paste. Do not replace thermal pad with thermal paste! Do not apply thermal paste on the thermal pad! Just leave thermal pad alone and apply thermal paste only on the processor.
I usually use Shin-Etsu thermal paste which is relatively cheap and performs well.
What if cooling module cannot be accessed easily?
In some laptops the cooling module is buried deep inside the case and cannot be easily accessed and removed. In order to remove the cooling module its necessary to disassemble the whole laptop but its only for experienced users.
Blow air into the fan grill on the bottom of the laptop.
2. Blow air into the grill on the side of the laptop.
Switch direction a few times until all dust is gone. Most likely this quick cleaning will fix your laptop overheating problem.

How to remove the BIOS splash screen Tamilnadu government laptop scheme
How to remove the BIOS splash screen Tamilnadu government laptop scheme
Are you tired of seeing the Tamil Nadu logo every time you switch on your laptop? Then this easy tutorial is for you!
EDIT: 08.02.2013 - If youre good at experimenting with technology and setting your own (any image of your choice) BIOS image, read on. For those of you who are bad at technical stuff, just download this zip file, extract, and run the .exe file as Administrator (Right click -> Run as Administrator)
Before we go any further, Id like to add that none of the steps mentioned here voids your agreement with the Government as we are still using it for personal use which is all that the agreement we signed states. The boot splash was meant to prevent you from selling the laptop which we are not going to do but actually use it more for ourselves now that the boot splash is not irritating us anymore.
A couple of days back, I got an email from one of the visitors to my website. Im always happy to actually hear from you guys so never hesitate even if it is just a comment or an email. So, his name was (also) Deepak. He was an Electronics Engineer and he had followed my tutorial on "How to make your TN Govt. Laptop AWESOME!" and was satisfied with it but he asked me if there is a way to remove the ugly bios splash screen you see above. So I took it upon myself and did a little digging around. Heres what I found:
There was this Youtube Video which shows that the splash screen has indeed been changed and this guy named Arun Lance has done it. So far so good. But things dont look so good after this cuz hes expecting people to contact him so that he can SELL his software to change the splash screen. It makes me sad that such things are actually being monetized rather than being shared with the world. So, I did some work and managed to change it using another method and decided to SHARE it with the world. The last time I attempted a BIOS flash was back in the days when it was done using FLOPPY drives but not to worry. It has evolved so much that you can easily do it from within Windows itself. So here you go. Lets get to Step 1 - click next to continue.
Before we make any changes to your current BIOS, we will first make a backup in case you ever want the TN logo again (I dont know why anyone will want that though) or if something goes wrong.
So in order to do that, we need to download a tool by Davidxxw which can be found here.
- Once downloaded, extract the contents using WinRAR (we will be using WinRAR in future also so make sure you have it installed.) and then right click the .exe file and select "Run as Administrator". You should be at a window like shown below.
- Now click the "Read" button.
- Once the read operation is complete, click the "Backup" button and you will be asked to save your file somewhere. Save it in a safe place and also keep a backup of the file as this is the original bios file. Your backup is now complete.
Now we will edit your bios file to change the splash image. Click next to find out how.
We will now see how to edit your BIOS file and change the splash image.
- Make a copy of your bios file that we made in the previous step and name it "44CN43WW.fd"
- Windows will ask if youre sure that you want to change the extension of the file. Click Yes.
- If Windows did not ask you that, make sure you did not name it as "44CN43WW.fd.rom". You need to change the extension of the file as well.
- Now our bios uses the Insydeh20 framework so we need an Insydeh20 editor. You can download it from here.
- Download the Ezh20.zip file and extract it.
- Right click the EZH20.exe file and select "Run as Administrator".
- In the EZH20 window, select File -> Load file and select the renamed "44CN43WW.fd" file.
- It will show you the files properties. Click Ok.
- Now go to Components -> Logo and you should be presented with the windows as shown below.
- You should click the "Image Information" drop-down and select the JPG(1024*768) option.
- Now in the "Logo Image To Load" section, click "Browse" and select the image file you need to use. (Scroll down for a few splash screen images I made in the correct format or go to the next section to know how to make your own image as using incorrect format will damage your BIOS.)
- Now click on "Patch" and wait (do not click or move anything at all) till it completes. It should say "FD file modify finished" on the bottom left.
- Now select the option File -> Save and wait till it says "FD file save data finished" on the bottom left.
- Now you can close the window. You have finished replacing the splash screen.
Here are a few splash screens I made to replace the TN logo. They will look a bit skewed but will look perfect on boot.
Bios Splash screen collection:
You can download this collection from here.
If you want to know how to make your own splash images, click next.
Or if you like, you can skip to Flashing a modified BIOS.
If you would like to make your own BIOS Splash Images, follow the steps below.
NOTE: The usual standard resolution for BIOS Splash Images is using a 640 x 480 px, 16-bit Bitmap. But for the B460e BIOS we will use a 1024x768 px resolution.
The BIOS splash screen uses a 1024x768 px image with a white 97x99 px overlay on the bottom right. For this reason, your Splash Image will look best with a white(#ffffff) background.
The other notable thing is that the screen resolution of the B460e is 1366x768 px and during boot, the 1024x768 px image is stretched across this resolution. Also, the image will only work if it is a 16 bit (important) Bitmap. So in order for the image to work and also for it to NOT appear stretched, follow the steps below. If you use improper settings, your splash screen will not appear or the laptop might not boot. I used Photoshop for these operations. If you cant afford Photoshop, use GIMP - a free open-source software.
- Open Photoshop and select the File -> New option with the below settings exactly.
- Create whatever artwork you like, taking note that the right bottom corner will get cut off a little so dont put anything much in the right bottom.
- Do not make your artwork too complex and avoid gradients or using too many colors. The flatter the colors the better. This is because the image file size must not be too high. If it becomes too high, there wont be enough space on the EEPROM chip where the BIOS is saved and it might corrupt your BIOS making it unable to boot. So just keep your artwork as minimal as possible.
- Now you must resize your image to 1024x768 px (to avoid stretched look, we work on 1366x768 px and resize to 1024x768 so that even though the output after this step will look stretched, when booting it will look normal.)
- To resize, go to Image -> Image size and in the dialog box, untick "Constrain proportions" checkbox (Important) and in width box enter 1024 and leave the height box at 768.
- Choose the option File -> Save As and select any name for your image file and select the format as "BMP" from the drop-down menu.
- On the next dialog box, choose 16 Bit as color depth and Windows mode as shown below.
Or go to the next page to see how to flash the modified BIOS file to your motherboards EEPROM chip.
Now that we have the modified BIOS file, "44CN43WW.fd" (if you followed all the previous steps correctly), we need to find a utility that will be able to flash the modified BIOS file to the EEPROM chip on the motherboard. It is advisable to not flash your BIOS too many times. 3-4 times is a safe number.
Now since the Lenovo B460e is a locked laptop, we will not be able to find a flash utility for our model so we will use the flash utility of the B450 model and replace the BIOS file with our modified BIOS before flashing.
- Go to the Lenovo Download Center to download the BIOS flash utility. or Here
- Ignore the fact that it says "for Vista 32 bit". It works on all OS above Vista and both on 32 bit and 64 bit systems. Im using a Windows 8 x64 system.
- Right click the file "1DCN26WW.exe" If you have WinRAR installed, you shoud see "Extract to 1DCN26WW" option, select it. (This is the step people usually go wrong at. You must use WinRAR to extract the exe. ) If you dont get the option when you right click, open WinRAR and browse to the exe and then extract it.
- Open the newly created "1DCN26WW" folder.
- Delete the file "1DCN26WW.fd".
- Copy the modified BIOS file "44CN43WW.fd" into this folder.
- Now make sure your laptop is charged more than 30% AND ALSO connected to a charging port via the AC adapter. Otherwise the Flashing utility will NOT start. Also make sure not even one window is open as it will cause problems when the laptop tries to automatically restart.
- Right click "InsydeFlash.exe" and select "Run as Administrator".
- Click OK to flash your BIOS. Do not touch your track-pad, mouse or keyboard until the laptop completes the automatic restart.
Note:If any of them do this wrongly or they put a lower version of bios means they got a problem, like keyboard mismatch, charger indication failure, audio not working due to wrong version of bios Then Enter key works as space bar,End key works as a enter key like that, then again you update a proper bios means problem solved.

how to Laptop Overheating Causes Shut Down
how to Laptop Overheating Causes Shut Down
Laptop Overheating Causes Shut Down

Note that these steps correspond with decision points on the flowchart and are reached through the interactive diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.
Can you see smoke or smell a burning odor? Never play with fire. If you see smoke or smell a burning odor, its not something you can afford to ignore. In some instances, brand new laptops will give off a bit of odor when they are first powered on that smells a little like hot plastic and a little like the ocean. In any other situation, smoke or smells coming from your laptop are not normal. If you recently spilled something on the laptop (shut down immediately) and have already dried it out and cleaned it to the best of your ability (or your repair persons ability), there may be a little residual burning off the first time you run the laptop and get it up to operating temperature.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Is the air temperature high or is the laptop in direct sunlight? All laptops will overheat if you use them in a cruel enough environment. Obvious examples are stifling hot attics, vehicles without air conditioning in the summer and placed on hot surfaces. Hot surfaces arent limited to radiators or desks touching steam pipes, they also include dark surfaces the get a lot of direct sunlight, even if they are located indoors. Using a laptop outside in direct sunlight in the summer is more than a problem for your eyes, its also likely to lead to overheating. Notebook computers are entirely reliant on air flow for cooling, and the higher the ambient air temperature, the less the laptop will be able to cool itself.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Is the battery too hot? Some people are more sensitive to temperature than others, so using "too hot to touch" isnt a great troubleshooting technique. Unfortunately, very few people have a thermometer around capable of measuring temperatures through the normal operation range of a battery, including most computer technicians, so touch is all most people will have to go on. If the battery seems excessively hot, first shut down, check the web to see if its been included in a recall or if a hot battery is typical of the the particular laptop model. Then proceed to the battery troubleshooting flowchart.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Have you noted that the fan never runs? Most laptop users are accustomed to hearing the cooling fan(s) straining away during certain intensive computing operations, and even the quietest, best behaved notebooks normally run the fan at low RPMs during normal operation. If the fan never runs, it doesnt mean your laptop is overheating, but it does mean that something may be wrong with the fan or the settings. If something is wrong with the fan or the temperature controller, eventually the laptop will overheat, unless you do all of your work in a walk in freezer.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Did you recently upgrade the BIOS? Anecdotally speaking, it seems that "my fan never comes on anymore" problems often occur after a BIOS upgrade. Manufacturers generally encourage users to install the latest BIOS version available for the model on the manufacturers website, and if you call tech support with an in-warranty fan or overheating problem, the first thing they are likely to do is tell you to upgrade to the latest BIOS. The problem is, the notebook really should operate normally with the BIOS version you purchased it with, or they shouldnt have sold it to you. If you want to add new peripherals or upgrade an internal component and its not supported unless you upgrade the BIOS, you dont have much choice. Outside of that, I avoid BIOS upgrades like the plague, keeping in mind that a failed upgrade can leave you with a paperweight that can only be repaired by sending it out. If the fan problem appeared after you upgraded the BIOS and the laptop which was operating fine originally is now overheating, Id try reinstalling the original BIOS if available.

how to Troubleshooting Laptop Hard Drive Failure
how to Troubleshooting Laptop Hard Drive Failure
Troubleshooting Laptop Hard Drive Failure
Note that these steps correspond with decision points on the flowchart and are reached through the interactive diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.
Is the LCD or monitor live? The first step in troubleshooting hard drive problems is determining whether or not you are dealing with a hard drive failure or something else entirely. Some non-technical people will refer to the any computer part that isnt a monitor as "the hard drive." If your LCD screen wont light up, the problem almost certainly isnt related to the hard drive.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Does Windows or whatever operating system you are using boot? Does the laptop start up normally, get you all the way to the desktop? If the OS boots, unless you are dealing with a noise issue, the problem youre having is either software related or an accumulation of errors on the drive. If youre getting very flaky errors, having difficulty when connected to the Internet, are seeing large scale file corruption or data loss, the problem is more likely due to malware (bad software such as a computer virus, spyware, trojans) than electronic or mechanical failure. However, if the operating system disk maintenance software, such as ScanDisk, is reporting errors every time you run it, if you see text messages about "write failures" or if successive surface scans report a large number of errors, your hard drive is actually failing. If you believe the hard drive is failing, back-up all of the data that can be read and replace the drive.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Will the laptop boot with AC power adapter attached? If the laptop boots up with the AC power adapter plugged in, the problem is with the battery, not the hard drive. Proceed to the battery troubleshooting flowchart. If you notice the hard drive performance seems to degrade badly when you are running on battery power, it means the power management is turning off the hard drive after too short of a delay on no activity, probably just a minute or two. You can change the power management setting to increase the shut-down delay for the hard drive or to ensure the hard drive remains spun up as long as the laptop is turned on.
Return to Diagnostic Chart
Does the laptop boot if you remove all external connections? If you have any external devices plugged into your notebook, printers, cameras, PC Cards (the replacement for PCMCIA cards), external keyboards or mice, network cables, monitors, unplug them all. If the laptop is sitting in a docking station, remove it. If the laptop boots when all of the external connections are removed, the problem isnt the hard drive, its a faulty external device or signal. You can determine which device is preventing the OS from booting by process of elimination. The problem isnt necessarily an hardware failure, it could be the driver for that device is so unfriendly or corrupted that its stalling the boot process when called to manage its client
